A water flosser can also be beneficial because it reduces gum irritation and inflammation that can occur from flossing with traditional string floss. Water flossers also provide a more thorough clean than traditional string floss by flushing away debris and bacteria that sit between teeth.

Visit the dentist at least twice a year for regular checkups and cleanings. During these visits, your dentist will be able to monitor your oral health and provide recommendations for keeping your teeth healthy. Talk to your dentist about the best oral care routine for you. It may include specific products you should use or techniques you should implement at home. You may need to see a dentist who specializes in treating gum disease or a periodontist if your gums are inflamed or if you’ve lost bone support. These specialists can assess the state of your bone support and determine what treatments are needed to keep it healthy.

Maintain a healthy diet. Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables and drink lots of water. This will keep your mouth clean and fresh and reduce dry mouth symptoms. It will also keep your blood sugar levels stable so that you’re not at an increased risk of developing complications of diabetes. If the medications you take for your diabetes make it difficult for you to eat a balanced diet, ask your doctor about alternative options or supplements you can take that can help provide you with nutrients. Avoid smoking or using tobacco products of any kind. Tobacco use increases the risk of developing oral cancers, cavities, and gum disease.
